“Mutation Series”, by Maarten de Ceulaer
Belgian designer Maarten de Ceulaer shows his new series, called “Mutation” at the Milan Design Week.

Featuring the organic transformation of cells, the seating furniture shows a virus or nuclear reaction that has gone out of scale. The designer is reviewing classical upholstery on an experimental base.

“I want to use my work to tell stories, to stir people’s emotions, to tickle their imagination or to make them wonder. A project can result from an observation of the society around me, or a reaction on something that simply crosses my path, but can as well be the expression of a very personal thought or feeling that I want to communicate to the world.”

Each item is unique. Foam-spheres of various sizes are applied to the structure. Then the object is coated with a tactile velvet-like finish. The prototypes range in size from small ottomans and stools to large sofas and over-sized chairs.
