“Tube” A Giant Tunnel of Magnetic Tape from VHS Cassettes, by Zilvinas Kempinas

Lithuanian artist Zilvinas Kempinas created “Tube”, an 80-foot long tunnel using magnetic tape from VHS cassettes.

“I am attracted to things that are capable of transcending their own banality and materiality to become something else, something more. I like the way that videotape is simultaneously delicate and durable, since it’s meant to last. I can rip it easily with my hands because it’s so thin, but I can also stretch it. Videotape is made to present the world in color, but it appears purely black. It’s supposed to be this safe container of the past, but it is destined to vanish like a dinosaur, to become obsolete, pushed away by new technologies. It’s a familiar mass-produced commodity, but it can be surprisingly sensual and can look almost alive if set in motion. It can be seen as a solid, thick, black line, but it can also disappear right in front of your eyes if it’s turned on its side” – Zilvinas Kempinas

“Green Cast” Facade, by KKAA

The Studio of the Japanese architect and engineer Kengo Kuma and associates (KKAA) designed a great building facade.

Planters made of aluminum panels cover the 1,052 m2 facade while providing space for facilities.

Watering hose, air reservoir for ventilation and downpipes are installed behind the panels so that the facade can accommodate a comprehensive system for the building. Each panel is slanted, and its surface appears to be organic.

The “Bloomframe” balcony is a clever design of a window that can transform into a balcony. Its manufacturer Hurks Geveltechniek announces it is now available on the market in The Netherlands.

Bloomframe is a safe and affordable building component made of steel, glass and aluminum that consist of three components: technique, frame and electronic control.

Its size, material and colour can all be changed upon request although the maximum width is of 3 meters (about 3.3 foot). The façade element can be produced in several transparent and closed materials. The adaptable design gives architects and builders considerable freedom with its use.

“Bubble Hotel”, by Attrap’Rêves

Near Marseille (France) based family company Attrap’Rêves is proposing guests a chance to sleep in fully furnished clear plastic bubbles situated in the middle of nature.

“We wanted to open the doors to create a true sharing poetic and sensory bubbles through the installation of design and ecological facility.”

The brother – specialized in the hotel industry – and sister – graduated in craftman building – offer 5 different bubbles with their own decoration: Suite Chic & Design, 1001 Nights, Zen, Glamour and Nature. Each is installed on privileged sites, away form the crowds.

“Popup”, Modular Seating by Charlotte Lancelot and Alain Berteau

Brussels-based (Belgium) designer Charlotte Lancelot in collaboration with the project designer and architect Alain Berteau created Popup, a light versatile seat.

A pouf when it is close, it becomes a small seat when you open it.

Aware that objects are a matter of desire and that we only acquire them because they speak to us and about us, Charlotte devises creative and playful concepts around the theme of durable development.

“Modular Building Material: Bamboo LED Lights Double”, by Jeff Dah-Yue Shi

Taiwanese designer Jeff Dah-Yue Shi designs a beautiful Bamboo LED system that strikes an unconventional balance between green building materials and energy-efficient illumination.

Tessellated bamboo panels combined with LED lights build walls, ceilings and floors. Minimalist spaces can be illuminated without using light fixtures.

The panels are made of a thin bamboo veneer that filters the light, a tempered glass to consolidate the structure and the LED light source at the base. The different levels of light and color intensity create the illusion of three-dimensions.

Dah-Yue Shi’s dynamic and modular design won the Taiwan Design Center’s gold pin design award in 2011.

Japanese designer Ryosuke Fukusada has mixed traditional Japanese woodworking techniques with modern technology to create this “Wooden Light Bulb”.

“The LED device is wrapped by wooden shell which is chipped until minimum thickness with Japanese ‘ROKURO’ technique. The socket is done by aluminum that suits wood with modern impression.”

This project was awarded with the Kyoto renaissance design competition and is still under development

“Camper Shoe Shop” in Lyon by Studio Makkink & Bey

Dutch designers Studio Makkink & Bey have completed a store for the shoe wear brand Camper in the French city of Lyon.

The red outlined staircase pedestals, stools or seem to go on forever. Bright red lines merge with graphics printed on the wall to give to basic walking movements – forwards, upwards and downwards – a dimension of infinity.

Stairs represent the conjunction of separate places. While performing as a place to meet, sit on or pass through, they expand places and establish rhythm, depth and infinity of spaces. More shoes are displayed on recessed shelving and the highest shelves can be reached using mobile blocks of yet more steps.

Camper often commissions designers to create the interiors for their stores.

“The CCTV Headquarters” Completed in Beijin, by OMA

The CCTV headquarters in Beijing, China are finally completed. Designed by OMA, a leading international partnership practicing architecture, urbanism, and cultural analysis, the doors of the new construction will open this year.

The skyscraper forms a looping tower with a dramatic cantilever. The building of the 473,000 square meter structure started in 2004. Two leaning towers rose in the sky to merge with the 75-foot perpendicular extension. Once scattered around the city, the 234-meters high structure contains studios, offices, broadcasting and production facilities into a single location.

On the facade a web of diagonals becomes denser in areas needing additional support and more open within areas of less stress, placing the structural integrity of the building on display.

“CCTV proposes a truly three-dimensional experience, culminating in a canopy that symbolically embraces the entire city. The loop also facilitates an unprecedented degree of public access to the production of China’s media: visitors will be admitted to a dedicated path circulating through the building, connecting all elements of the program and offering spectacular views from the multiple facades towards the CBD, the Forbidden City, and the rest of Beijing.”

“Wingsuit Landing Without Parachute” by Gary Connery

British stuntman and skydiving instructor Gary Connery made a new record. He landed his wingsuit safely without opening his parachute.

After three appreciation jumps, Gary left the heli at 2400ft to land in a pit made of 18,000 cardboard boxes.
